“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus” – Ephesians 2:6
LIGHT FOR NOW: Union with Christ does not only change where we came from; it changes where we stand. In Christ, the believer has been raised from spiritual death and given a new position in heavenly places.
Paul reveals another dimension of our union with Christ in Ephesians 2:6: “He hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus”. Notice the language: raised us up together. The Greek word is synegeiro, meaning “to raise together with.” Paul is showing that the believer’s spiritual history is connected to Christ’s resurrection. But he goes further: “made us sit together”. The word is sygkathizo, meaning “to seat together with.” This speaks of position, authority, and rest. The believer is not spiritually standing outside Christ, trying to earn a place before God. In Christ, he has been given a position of acceptance and spiritual authority.
This is why Paul says “in Christ Jesus”. Our heavenly position is not the result of human achievement. It is the result of union with Christ. Jesus was raised from the dead and exalted, and those who are united with Him share in the benefits of His exalted position. This does not mean the believer physically lives in heaven now. We still live on earth, work, study, build relationships, and face ordinary responsibilities. But spiritually, our position and identity are connected to Christ in the heavenly realm. Colossians 3:1 therefore says, “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above”.
Notice the order. Raised with Christ – therefore seek above. Our behaviour is meant to flow from our position. Many believers try to live upward in order to become accepted. The gospel reveals that in Christ, we have already been accepted; therefore, we learn to live from that position. This is also why the believer does not approach life as a helpless victim. We may face difficulties, but we face them from a position of spiritual identity in Christ. We may encounter opposition, but our confidence is not rooted in circumstances. We may experience weakness, but our position in Christ remains secure.
The revelation of being seated with Christ produces spiritual rest. Rest does not mean inactivity; it means we stop trying to earn what God has already given us in Christ. Our relationship with God is not built on constant striving for acceptance. It is built on grace. The believer must therefore learn to think from heaven while living on earth. Our citizenship is heavenly. Our values are heavenly. Our hope is heavenly. Our life is hidden with Christ in God. Union with Christ has given us more than a destination called heaven. It has given us a position in Christ. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: Today, refuse to approach life from the mentality of a spiritual victim. Remember your position in Christ and let your thoughts, decisions, and confidence flow from it.
CONFESSION: I am raised with Christ and seated with Him in heavenly places. I am accepted in Christ, secure in Christ, and positioned in Christ. I live from this heavenly reality and walk in the authority and rest of my union with Him, in Jesus Name. Amen!
