“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature…” – 2Peter 1:4
LIGHT FOR NOW: The promises of God are not merely words to admire; they are channels through which believers grow in the practical experience of the divine nature.
When Peter speaks about becoming “partakers of the divine nature”, he surrounds this glorious truth with another important reality: The promises of God. He writes: “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises”. Notice the language Peter uses. He does not simply call them promises; he calls them “exceeding great and precious promises”. Every word is intentional. They are great because they proceed from the infinite God. They are precious because they reveal His gracious heart. And they are exceeding because they surpass every human expectation.
The Christian life cannot be separated from the promises of God. Every promise reveals something about His character. Every promise unveils His faithfulness. Every promise strengthens our confidence in His nature. Peter then makes a profound statement: “That by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature”. This does not mean the promises themselves impart the new birth. The new birth comes through faith in Christ. Rather, Peter teaches that God’s promises become the means through which believers increasingly experience and express the divine life they have already received.
Think of a seed; a seed already possesses life. But it requires nourishment, water, and sunlight for that life to mature. Likewise, the believer already possesses the divine nature. But as he continually embraces God’s fulfilled promises by faith, that divine life grows stronger in its expression. This is why believers should never treat God’s promises as religious slogans. They are spiritual realities. When God says, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee”, the believer learns to live free from abandonment.
When God says, “My grace is sufficient for thee”, the believer discovers strength in weakness. When God says, “Peace I leave with you”, the believer learns to rest even in difficult seasons. The promises do not create God’s faithfulness; they reveal it; they become anchors for the soul; they renew our minds; they shape our expectations; and they align our thinking with the life we possess in Christ. Notice also that Peter immediately connects the divine nature with escaping “the corruption that is in the world through lust”. The believer is no longer governed by the fallen desires that dominate the world. Why? It is because he now possesses a higher life.
The divine nature does not merely restrain sinful desires; it introduces superior desires. A person who has discovered clean water no longer longs for polluted water. Likewise, the believer who delights in God’s life finds the attractions of the old life steadily losing their control. This transformation happens as God’s promises continually renew the heart and mind. The more we meditate upon His Word, the more we think like Christ. The more we think like Christ, the more we live like Christ. This is why Scripture occupies such a central place in the believer’s life; it is not merely a book of commandments; it is a treasury of divine promises.
Every page points us to Christ. Every promise strengthens our faith. Every revelation deepens our participation in the divine nature. Today, refuse to measure your life by your circumstances; measure it by God’s promises. For His promises are greater than your fears, stronger than your weaknesses, and more certain than your changing emotions. The God who promised is faithful. And His divine nature is continually being expressed in those who trust His Word. Hallelujah!
