“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.” – Ephesians 1:4
LIGHT FOR NOW: The divine nature is not an afterthought in God’s plan. Before the world began, the Father purposed that those who are in Christ would share His holy life and stand before Him without blame.
One of the most comforting truths in Scripture is that our salvation did not begin when we believed. It began in the eternal purpose of God. Paul writes: “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world”. Notice carefully the phrase: “In Him”. God’s choice is centred in Christ. The Father did not choose us because of our personal goodness; nor because He foresaw our own merit. He chose that all who are united to His Son would share in everything that belongs to Christ. Christ is the Chosen One; and everyone who is in Him shares in that gracious purpose.
Paul then says: “Before the foundation of the world”. Before Adam sinned; before the stars filled the heavens; before history began. The Father already had redemption in view. This does not mean sin surprised God; neither does it mean God caused sin. Rather, it reveals that His wisdom and grace were never caught unprepared. The Lamb was “foreordained before the foundation of the world”, and in Christ, God purposed an eternal family. Paul now reveals the purpose of this choice: “That we should be holy and without blame before him in love”.
Notice that holiness is presented as God’s purpose for His people. It is not the means by which we earn His acceptance. It is the result of sharing His life. The word “holy” comes from the Greek word hagios, meaning set apart, consecrated, belonging to God. To be holy is first to belong to God. It is because we belong to Him that our lives increasingly reflect His character. Paul also says believers are “without blame”. This speaks first of our position before God. Through Christ’s finished work, the believer stands accepted, forgiven, justified, and clothed with Christ’s righteousness. This standing becomes the foundation from which holy living flows.
Notice how Paul ends the verse: “Before him in love”. Everything God does toward us is rooted in love. He chose us in love; He redeemed us in love; He adopted us in love; He sanctifies us in love; and He will ultimately glorify us in love. The divine nature can never be separated from the Father’s love. His holiness is never harsh; His righteousness is never cold; His justice is never without mercy. Everything He accomplishes in the believer flows from His perfect love. This truth removes fear from the Christian life.
We are not striving to persuade God to accept us. We are living from the acceptance He has already given us in Christ. And because we have received His holy life, we now desire to live lives that honour Him. This is the beauty of the divine nature. Holiness is no longer an external burden. It becomes the inward desire of a heart that has been transformed by grace. As you meditate on this truth today, remember that your life is not an accident. You are part of an eternal purpose conceived in the heart of the Father before time began. He has called you to share His life, to reflect His holiness; and to stand confidently before Him, clothed forever in the righteousness of Christ. Hallelujah!
INSTRUCTION: Thank God today that your identity is rooted in His eternal purpose rather than in your past. Live with the confidence that you belong to Him and allow His holy nature to be expressed in your daily conduct.
CONFESSION: Father, thank You for choosing me in Christ before the foundation of the world. Thank You for making me holy through the finished work of Jesus and for giving me Your divine nature. Help me to live each day in the beauty of Your holiness and the assurance of Your unfailing love, in Jesus’ name, Amen. Glory!
