“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand” – John 10:28-29
LIGHT FOR NOW: You have the very life of God in you as a believer. You will not have eternal life, you have eternal life already.
When Jesus said “And I give unto them eternal life” above, he was actually saying “I give unto them myself”. This is because Jesus himself is eternal life. So the person talking in John 10:28-29 was eternal life. That’s why in John 10:10 he says he came that we might have life. Meaning he came as the life. And that’s why in John 14:6, he calls himself “the life”, which is similar to John 11:25. So, eternal life is a person. Apostle John in his epistle has this to say in 1John 1:2 “For the life was manifested and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the father, and with his son Jesus Christ”. To make it clearer, in 1John 5, Apostle John clarifies, it reads “And this is the record, that God hath given unto us eternal life, and this life is in his son. He that hath the son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” (1John 5:11-13). Apostle John clearly shows us here that eternal life is a person. He says “He that has the son has life. He that has not the son has not life”.
In verse 20 of 1John 5, he shades further light, it reads “And we know that the Son of God is come, and has given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his son Jesus Christ, and eternal life”. Here he calls Jesus two things:
- The true God
- Eternal Life
Eternal life is thus a person, and not a thing nor an item. Eternal life is a “him”, and not an “it”. That’s why 1John 1:2 says “For the life was manifested and we have seen it”; that word “it” was not in the original, because it’s in italics. Meaning, translators added that word “it” but a good bible study lets us know eternal life is not an “it” but a “him”. Hence, the “it” in 1John 1:2 should be ignored and read this way “For the life was manifested and we have seen”. You can add “him” in the place of “it” and read as “For the life was manifested and we have seen him”. Eternal life is Jesus and he lives in us. Glory!
