“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand” – John 10:28-29
LIGHT FOR NOW: When the person of Jesus took residence inside you at salvation; eternal life took residence inside you because the person of Jesus is eternal life.
Eternal life is a person, and his name is Jesus Christ. Jesus doesn’t just give eternal life, he himself is eternal. Jesus in John 10:10 has this to say, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly”. Jesus says he came that we might have life; meaning he came as the life, and he himself is the life. The life he is talking about here in John 10:10 is eternal life. For him to tell people who were alive that he came for them to have life, he can’t be referring to physical life or human life but eternal life. So, man without the life of God is dead (in spiritual sense). Jesus came that men might have life because he himself is the life. That is why in John 14:6, Jesus has this to say “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”. Jesus in John 14:6 above calls himself the life; that is, He is the life. Eternal life is Jesus. In John 11:25, Jesus says “Jesus saith unto her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live”. So, who is Jesus? Jesus is eternal life.
When Jesus comes inside you, eternal life comes inside you. The giving of eternal life to us by Jesus is him taking up residence in us. So Jesus saying in our key text “I give unto them eternal life” is him actually saying “I give unto them myself”, why? This is because he himself is eternal life. As Christ dwells in a man at salvation, eternal life dwells in that man. Jesus therefore, is eternal life and eternal life is Jesus. Christ taking up residence in you is eternal life. Eternal life is Christ in you. Is Christ in you? Yes! Therefore, is eternal life in you? Yes! So, if Christ in you is eternal life, how long is Christ in you? Forever is the answer. If Christ in me is eternal life, then Christ in me is an eternal reality. Hallelujah!
