“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved, for I bear them record that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God”- Romans 10:1-3
LIGHT FOR NOW: The Spirit of God dwells in you permanently.
Ezekiel 36:27 was a prophecy about the status of the new creation which was yet to be fulfilled as at the time spoken. This has been fulfilled now in Christ. By the spirit of God, Ezekiel said, “And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgement, and do them”. Today, this prophecy have been fulfilled, the new creation has the Spirit of Christ within – the Spirit resides in him permanently. This indwelled Spirit is a force, a nature, an ability that compels him to do what’s right always. Rightness now becomes his manner of life which he showcases naturally. In our theme text, the Apostle Paul decried the Spiritual condition of the Jews, chiding them for being ignorant of God’s righteousness provided in Christ. Instead of submitting themselves to the righteousness of God, they were going about establishing their own righteousness which always amounted to non-fruition. Sadly, this is the state of most believers today. Believers ought not to struggle to live right because our new nature of righteousness naturally produces in us and through us the rightness of God.
Many believers don’t understand the doctrine of righteousness; they are not taught the word accurately, hence, they keep struggling with sin. But where the believer is consistently reminded of who he has become in Christ and he is established in it, he will not want to sin because sin naturally detests him. The outcome would be that the rightness of God will be seen in the way he thinks, talks and acts. In our theme text, Paul further uses salvation and righteousness interchangeably, which implies that the only way one can be said to be righteous is to be born again. More shall be unveiled in our subsequent studies.
