“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side. Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.” – Isaiah 60:1-5
LIGHT FOR NOW: In your reading of scriptures, you must be observant enough to know when to read or backtrack having encountered a text that demands such.
Back to Matthew 19:3-8 which reads, “The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read that he which made them male and female, And said, for this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of document, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so”. The word “lawful” used by the Pharisees in verse 3 was translated from the Greek word “exesti”; it implies an inquisition. That is to say, “is it allowed? Or is it legal?” They were referring to the Law of Moses, that is, what Moses wrote. We dropped a clue in previous study that they came to Jesus with Deuteronomy. They were quoting Moses in Deuteronomy 24.
In the law of systematic reading and interpretation, we established that the bible is such that you can read forward and backward. When you find a text in a book that references a previous book, you must go back to the chapter or verse of the previous book concerned and read it again, and if need be read the entire chapter or book again where there exist a bit of confusion in your minds. Hallelujah!!!
