“But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word” – (Acts 6:4)

LIGHT FOR NOW: The Gospel is a message of reconciliation.

The call of God which is salvation is also a call to the ministry of the word. This practically involves the preaching and teaching of the word. The gospel is the message of reconciliation which facts are about Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection (1Corinthians 15:1-4). This is the power to save and every believer must fully be armed with the accurate and comprehensive knowledge of the facts of this message. Paul speaking about the message said, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to very one that believeth; to the Jews first and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).So the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of Jesus are the only facts a man needs to hear and be saved. Hence, the preacher shouldn’t impute his facts into the gospel but preach the simplicity of the gospel which is the love of God, displayed in Jesus’ vicarious death for the sins of mankind and His resurrection for our salvation; hence, more believers are needed to get the gospel out; like the apostles, it’s our mission and our work. Paul’s statement in 1Corinthians 9:16 showed his commitment to the message, he said, “for though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel”. God’s desire is that the earth be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea (Habakkuk 2:14). This should be our desire too, demonstrated through our preaching of the gospel.

The work of the ministry demands labour and a good example of a believer who laboured in ministry was Epaphras; he’s said to have exerted so much energy in the place of prayer. “Epaphras, who is one of us, a servant of Christ salute you, always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God” (Colossians 4:12). Observe that he was not praying for his own needs but for others. And interestingly, the epistle is replete with instruction to pray for the saints. Ephesians 6:18 says, “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching there unto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”. Notice: “For all saints”. 1Thessalonians 5:17 also says “Pray without ceasing”. The above referenced text implies that the praying here supersedes praying at convenience. It is ministry work. For the saints, prayers are towards abounding in Knowledge and effectiveness in their faith walk. Ministry is labour and prayer is part of it.

INSTRUCTION: Never take the work of training and evangelizing in vain.

PRAYER: I affirm that the work of ministry is my responsibility. My heart is sold out to Christ, to mission, evangelism, discipleship and service. Glory!

QUOTE: Ministry is labor and prayer is part of it.
