“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” – Mark 16:15-18

LIGHT FOR NOW: The message of Christ is the message of the church because the church is the church of Christ.

Previously, we observed Apostle Peter’s words in 1Peter 1:23, 25 closely and we asked a question which was: What gospel was preached unto them? And in context, verses 2 and 3 explain it, which reads “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace be multiplied. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you” (1Peter 1:2-4). So, the gospel that was preached unto them was concerning the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. The resurrection of Jesus is where we find the new birth. Again, the person of Jesus is the focus. Notice, in verses 10 and 11, Peter talks about the prophets who prophesied of the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow, it reads “Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: searching what, or what manner of time the spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow”.

Hence, from the few texts we have examined in the epistles, where the term “the gospel” was used, the fundamental thing that we saw, apart from the fact that it is a message that is preached and also that it centers on a person (Christ), is the fact that it was spoken of more outside of the synoptic gospels. The frequency of the use of the term and the explanation of what the gospel is, is seen more and found in the epistles respectively. This is because the message or the focus of the gospel is the resurrection of Jesus. Thus, Jesus’ earthly life which is found in the synoptic gospels cannot be the message of the gospel. The message of will be found after He rose from the dead, and well explained in the epistles. Having seen this so far in our study, we will proceed in subsequent studies to examine the minister of the gospel, who he is and then zero our studies down to our key text (Mark 16:15-18). Hallelujah!

INSTRUCTION: Stay with the message of Christ.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the revelation of your word growing in me like never before, in Jesus Name, Amen

QUOTE: The church is the church of Christ and thus, the message of Christ should be the crux in the church message.
