“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek”
Paul preached Christ in Berea; these men were described as more noble than those in Thessalonia. It is important to note that, they were not Christians at this point. When Paul preached to them about Jesus, they searched the scriptures to verify its authenticity. And it was after this that they received the word with readiness of heart. The word “noble” in Acts 17:11 refers to their status in the society; people of renowned standing. Many times in evangelism, we share with someone and he leaves unconvinced, such a person may need further clarification. At times it may take a while before our hearer comprehends the fact of the message. We can create an avenue to revisit so as to establish more clarity in the message. To communicate the message properly, the preacher will require diligence in listening and studying the word of God.
That is why Apostle Paul told his son Timothy: “study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). The word ‘study ’ was translated from the Greek word ‘spoudazo ’; which implies to be diligent; to make effort; to be eager. Diligence means hard work; consistency. The instruction for Timothy to be diligent is further emphasized when Paul used the word “workman ” which was translated from the Greek word “ergates” and it implies a labourer which is the reason for diligence with scriptures . The phrase ‘rightly dividing the word of truth ’ is from a compound word in the Greek “orthotomes”, and it means to “cut straight”. The result of this will be to uphold and communicate “healthy and sound bible doctrine”.
In as much as we should be fully involved in evangelism, we must be armed with the precise knowledge of the message. We shouldn’t act as people who have lost touch with the real reason for our life here on earth. We all must ‘go after’, ‘search for’, ‘look for’* the lost in our sphere of influence.
