‘’And Joseph, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is being interpreted, the son of consolation) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, having land, sold it and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles feet” Acts 4 :36-37
LIGHT FOR NOW: There is the finished work of Christ, there is also an on-going work of Christ
The office of a pastor with its duties and responsibilities is such a sensitive office in the local church, such that if not properly understood, the very essence of the pastor which is for the maturity of believers in view of the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:11-16) will be abused and replaced with other activities such as entrepreneurship, multi-level marketing, project management etc; all in the name of meeting the needs of the saints. Actually, there’s nothing wrong in business seminars, deals and the likes for believers. They are good and noble initiatives but they fall outside the purview of the pastor’s duties. It is not the reason why God placed the pastor over His flock. In the event that is done in the ambit of a local church, it amounts to an abuse of a privileged office and needs to stop. The word ‘Pastor’ as we see in Ephesians 4:11 was translated from the Greek word *poimen* and it is used figuratively and literally to refer to one who is a shepherd. This in itself implies that, this speaks of one who has a sheepfold or flock and is responsible for nurturing, caring for and protecting the flock under his charge.
There is the finished work of Christ and there’s also the ongoing work of Christ. The finished work of Christ has to do with the entire work of redemption for mankind; what Jesus has done in His death, burial and resurrection and there’s no human contribution to this. The ongoing work of Christ is what the spirit of God is doing in the heart of the believer today as regards bringing out the fruits of what Christ has already done. And every believer ought to be taught, equipped, inspired and be fully involved in this. The ongoing work of Christ is the believer’s obligation as being part of God’s family. The ongoing work of Christ has to do with what the believer is to do with and about the gospel. It has to do with evangelism, prayer and giving. In our theme text, we see Barnabas being mentioned as one who stood out in his giving for the work of the gospel. Many will not hear the gospel if you keep back your money. Someone’s eternity depends on your giving; so give responsibly and always for the propagation of the gospel.
INSTRUCTION: Don’t stop giving for the propagation of the gospel of Christ.
PRAYER: Father, thank you for the available opportunities granted me to be a blessing to my work via the gospel, in Jesus Name, Amen.
QUOTE: The Church is not a place for business seminars; the Church is the place where believers are equipped via the Gospel for discipleship
