THE GOOD THING IN YOU; YOUR AUTHORITY IN CHRIST (18)

“And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth – Genesis 1:26-28.

LIGHT FOR NOW: The image and likeness of God in whom dominion is found is the person of Jesus.

Having clarified the analysis of Genesis 1:26-28 where we have Christ and the man in Christ in line with Genesis 2:7 where man (Adam) was made a living soul, it can thus be said that the ideology or theology that Adam was created in God’s image and likeness, given dominion and authority but later lost it to Satan and God had to send Jesus to come down and die getting back the authority to man is on a wrong falling. The image and likeness of God is the person of Jesus and it is in the person of Jesus we have men who are in the image and likeness of God. So, humanity not in Christ can’t be the image of God. The authority and dominion was in Christ, so it will take a man to be in Christ to occupy this authority. Don’t forget that the plan of God for the man of Genesis 2:7 is the man of Genesis 1:26-28. So Jesus is God’s Adam offered to the first man Adam. If Adam was not in that dominion and authority as we’ve said, the question which is already answered but to be clarified better here is, was that dominion/authority offered to Adam? The answer is Yes! The next question is, how was it offered to Adam? The answer is “the tree of life”. So, God’s plan in Genesis 1:26-28 was offered to Adam in Genesis 2:16-17 as the tree of life.

We saw that the last Adam (Christ Jesus) is a quickening spirit. The word “quickening spirit” means life giving spirit. The tree of life was thus figurative of Christ; man eating of the tree of life was figurative of faith in Christ and not eating of the tree of life which equals eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil is unbelief to God’s offer which is Christ. And Adam did not accept God’s offer because in Genesis 3:6, it is clear that man chose unbelief (man ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil). So man (Adam) was not in Christ and thus, did not have that dominion and authority, and if he did not have it, then it is out of place to say that Satan got the dominion from him. For more clarity, David in Psalm 8 quotes Genesis 1:26-28 in attempt to know which man was in dominion, it reads “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:” (Psalm 8:4-6). The writer of Hebrews answers David’s question, it reads “But one in a certain place testified, saying, what is man, that thou art mindful of him? Or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. But we see Jesus…” (Hebrews 2:6-9). So is Adam the answer to David’s enquiry? The answer is no. the man in that dominion was not Adam because Adam rejected it, hence, the writer of Hebrews made it clear that when you look at Adam, you don’t see all things under him. But Jesus is the answer; we see Jesus. Adam wasn’t in Christ, so he didn’t occupy that dominion. That dominion or authority is what is referred to as the right hand of the Father.
