“And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” – Genesis 1:26-28.
LIGHT FOR NOW: The death and resurrection of Christ was how He was going to multiply sons on the earth.
It is clear by the investigation so far that Genesis 1:26-28 speaks of Christ and the new creation in Christ. So when Moses recorded that God said “Be fruitful and multiply”, Christ is still in the picture and the new creation in Him. Though many believe this statement “Be fruitful and multiply” to mean Eve giving birth to children but the intent of that statement is not that submission. Be fruitful and multiply is about Jesus giving birth to sons, and it’s going to be a product of His death and resurrection from the death. Jesus in John 12:24 shows this, it reads “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit”. Jesus here was saying I will die and upon my resurrection, I will mass produce sons. The death and resurrection of Jesus was how he was going to multiply sons on the earth.
Furthermore, when we believers win souls into the kingdom via evangelism, we are being fruitful and we are multiplying on the earth. The intent of Genesis 1:28 thus was the death and resurrection of Jesus in which sons will be multiplied, and the concept of the ongoing work of Christ called evangelism in which the man in Christ gets the unsaved saved by the gospel. That’s why after saying “Be fruitful and multiply”, he now says “and replenish the earth”. For you to say “replenish”, it means something had gone wrong. In language to say “replenish” is same as saying refill, to supply again. So, why replenish the earth? It is because Adam rejected God’s plan of being in the image of God and having dominion. He rejected it and thus was out of God’s plan, and based on this, Jesus will replenish the earth, how? He will die and rise from the death to bring man back to God’s plan which man (Adam) rejected in Eden. And today we replenish the earth when we get people saved by the gospel of Christ. So “Be fruitful, multiply and replenish the earth” means the corn of wheat (Jesus) will die and rise from the death and upon resurrection he will bring many sons unto glory (Hebrews 2:10) and we will multiply on the earth by getting the message of salvation to the unsaved. Glory!!!
