“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light: and there was light” Genesis 1:1-3.
LIGHT FOR NOW:Salvation is God’s solution to man in darkness.
From John’s explanation of Genesis 1:1-3 and Paul’s explanation in 2Corinthians 4:6, let’s begin to draw certain inference as touching verse 2 of Genesis having known verse 3. From 2Corinthians 4:6, the light is shining in the heart of men, hence, darkness is the state of man’s heart without light. The statement “and darkness was upon the face of the deep” was to describe man’s heart without the light. The earth was “tohoboho” (nothing, nothing), that is man without the light is nothing and empty. The earth in verse 2 was figurative for man. And thus, the two statements “face of the deep” and “face of the waters” which were personifications were descriptive terminologies for man. That is, the face of the deep, the face of waters and the earth in that verse referred to man. So, “darkness was upon the face of the deep” was to describe man (figuratively portrayed as earth) being without the light or empty of the light (the person of Jesus). That already shows you that man without Christ is empty; man without Christ is nothing, and this man is in darkness or this man is of darkness.
Remember that we saw that life is in the light. So when God said “let there be light”, then it can be deduced that life is in that light, and that is why eternal life is in salvation. Now if life is in the light, then invariably, death is in darkness. In other words, the man without Christ is a dead man (spiritually dead). Man cannot afford to be without Christ. So death is in the darkness and thus, that darkness will be figurative for sin because it is in sin we can find death. The death is not from God; the death is the absence of the light of God. What then is the solution to man in darkness or man being without form and void? The next statement from verse 2 into verse 3 is the answer, “And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light…” Hallelujah!
