“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light: and there was light” Genesis 1:1-3.
LIGHT FOR NOW: The light of Genesis 1:3 is the person of Jesus.
With the understanding of John 1:1-5 where Genesis 1:1-3 is explained, it can be deduced that the utterance “let there be light” in verse 3 is an utterance of salvation. Remember light refers to the person of Jesus and it encapsulates God’s salvation plan found in Him. Also remember that Jesus is God (John 1:1). In 1John 1:5, John says “…God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all…” In other words, Genesis 1:3 could be understood as:
- “God said let there be”
- “God said Jesus…” and this already points you to the incarnation which was for the purpose of executing God’s plan of salvation which was already in prophetic utterance in Genesis 1:1-3. It was in the incarnation that God became Jesus Christ (the son).
- “Father said son…” That is why the son is the Father manifest and the Father is the son revealed.
All of the above can be summed up to one fact that the utterance in Genesis 1:3 is salvation. In other words, the reason for father, son (and let me add Holy Ghost) is for salvation. That is, the trinity is a concept of redemption. Don’t forget we see the Father and Son in verse 3; the Father (God), and the Son (light/Jesus). Now where is the Holy Ghost? Having known that verse 3 of Genesis 1 is in reference to the person of Jesus or light shining in darkness which is Christ in the heart of men, let’s buttress this with Paul’s words in 2Corinthians 4:6 where Paul was equally explaining Genesis, it reads “For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shine in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ”. Have you seen that? Where is the light shining? The light is shining in our hearts (the heart of men). In essence, if the light is shining in men’s heart, then darkness will be the state of man’s heart without the light. This explanation already unveils verse 2 of Genesis 1 to us, “And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep…” Hallelujah!
