“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light: and there was light” Genesis 1:1-3.
LIGHT FOR NOW: The person of Jesus is the life and in the life is the light.
We proceeded in our analysis to bring the light in Genesis to the spotlight in other to be able to unbundle the darkness in verse 2 and other spiritual truths. Remember in John 1:1-5 where John is explaining Genesis 1, John lets us know in verse 4 that “All these things (life and light) existed in him”. So in the beginning, life was found in Christ and that life (eternal life) in him is the light of men. Notice the next verse “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not” (John 1:5). Remember, in Christ was the life which was the light of men. In other words, we will have light in the life and vice versa. In John 8:12, Jesus said “I am the light of the world”. Light is thus figurative of the person of Christ in whom salvation is found. Thus the statement “And the light shineth in darkness” is salvation, that is Christ in the heart of man. Thus, darkness in verse 5 was figurative of men, hence why verse 4 already said “light of men”. “Light of men” (verse 4) was to figuratively communicate the truth that Jesus is the saviour of mankind, hence, the next statement “And the light shineth in darkness…” that is, Christ in the heart of man (the man in darkness) and the darkness could not withstand it (that is, a change of state from darkness to light). So, when Christ enters a man’s heart, there is a change of state from darkness to light. That light shining out of darkness is Christ in the heart of man which is salvation.
In other words, darkness will now stand to be man’s state or heart without the light. Jesus is the light; He is the light that shines out of darkness (salvation). So the light denotes the person of Jesus and salvation found in Him, that is why He is the savior. Also remember the light in the life and vice versa. Jesus in John 14:6 says “I am the life”. So, the person of Jesus is life and light; life is in the light, the light is in the life. In other words, eternal life is in salvation or the person of Jesus who is the saviour that makes salvation available is the custodian of eternal life. Now, this analysis already unbundles Genesis for us. Let’s bring the analysis back to Genesis 1:1-3 in our next study.
