“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also” – John 14:1-3
LIGHT FOR NOW: Jesus was communicating our union with the Father in the above text.
We discovered from a careful contextual and grammatical analysis of the above text, that the text can be rendered as: “In my father’s household/family, there are many dwelling places…” Remember, “His going to prepare a place not for Himself but for us…” He said, “So that where I am, you may be also”. And we saw where He is in context; He is the Father! The Father and Jesus are in the same “oikia”. They were and are in the same “mone”. Hence, He told them emphatically in verse 9 “…he that has seen me has seen the father…” This means that when Jesus said in verse 3 “…where I am, there you will be”, what he explained was “the believer will be in the Father and the Father will be in Him”. That is, the believer will be in union with the Father in Him. Hence, the statement “where I am, you may be also” was not referring to being in the same location physically; He was actually referring to our identification with Him. That was why he explained further in the following texts:
- Verse 10… In the Father, the Father in Me.
- Verse 20… We will come and make our abode with Him.
- Verse 23… In the Father, ye in Me, and I in you.
Hence, his “going to prepare a place for us”, was to make us as He is. It was not referring to a physical place or location; rather, a nature, a status, a condition. So, if where He is, is where we are, then just as He explained to His disciples… everyone who has believed the gospel is the dwelling place/abode of the Father. Recall, in verse 3, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to myself; that where I am, there ye may be also”. Hence, His going to prepare a place for us was to come again to us and receive us to Himself; to make us like Him. You are in the Father and the Father is in you. You are the Father’s dwelling. The dwelling place or abode of the Father is in the believer. Hallelujah!
