“God, who at sundry times and in diverse manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets; Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things; by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high;” – Hebrews 1:1-3

LIGHT FOR NOW: Jesus is the substance that makes God real.

Having observed key words in verse 1 of the above text, and reading it into verse 2, let’s observe the statement “the express image of his person”. The word “person” in the above text is the word “hupostasis” in Greek, which implies that which makes the existence of another real. This word “person” (hupostasis) is the same word that was used in Hebrews 11:1 translated as “substance” and Hebrews 3:14 translated/rendered as confidence. In other words, the word “hupostasis” also implies “assurance” or “confidence”. Thus, the writer of Hebrews used it to depict an assurance or reality.

In essence, the writer of Hebrews used the word in reference to the fact that the person of Jesus is the “assurance”; that which gives reality to the revelation of the person and character of God; that is, Jesus is the substance of God that has not been seen. Therefore, seeing or knowing him is equivalent to seeing or knowing God. So, to know the father (God), we look at the son. The perfect view of God that we have is in the Son (Jesus Christ). Paul echoed in his letter to the Colossian church, “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature” (Colossians 1:15). So we see God where? We see God in Christ; he is the image of the invisible God. The invisible God is made visible in the visible Christ.

Recall, John 1:18 “No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten son, which is in the bosom of the father he hath declared him”. The father has been declared in the son; that is, God has been explained in Christ. Hallelujah!

PRAYER: My eyes of understanding are enlightened, in Jesus Name, Amen.
