“No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him” John 1:18
LIGHT FOR NOW: On Mount Sinai, the principal actors were angels and not God.
In our last study, we looked at the Exodus 20 account which most folks read and hastily drawn to the logical conclusion that the principal actor on that Mount where Moses received the law is God. And so from here, many folks opine to the fact that Moses must have seen God. But we have seen from the New Testament where we have the revelation of the Old Testament that on Mount Sinai, the principal actors were angels and not God. Hear Stephen again, “This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to Him in the Mount Sinai, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us: Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it” (Acts 7:38, 53). So, on Mount Sinai, was it God or an angel that spoke to Moses? It was an angel that spoke to Moses. How was the law received? The law was received by the disposition of angels. So, Stephen knew that the acts that made people fear and tremble (Moses inclusive) on Mount Sinai which was accorded to God were actually the activities of angels. So Stephen words in the book of Acts put the record straight.
Lets’ begin to explore the epistles. In Galatians 3:19, Paul has this to say “Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgression, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator”. Notice, “it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator”. The mediator here is Moses. So, Paul here echoes same truth as Stephen echoed in Acts 7:38. Paul was very clear, it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. The writer of Hebrews in chapter 2 verse 2 has this to say, “For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward” (Hebrews 2:2). In like manner (just like Stephen and Paul), the writer of Hebrews also described the law as the words spoken by angels. So, when Jesus said, “no man hath seen God at any time”, Jesus knew what he was saying. Thus, from Acts 7:38, 53; Galatians 3:19 and Hebrews 2:2, it is evident that:
- It was an angel who spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai.
- The law was received by the disposition of the angels.
- The law were words spoken by angels.
