SIN AND THE BELIEVERS’ RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD (5)

My little children, these things write I unto you that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world – 1John 2:1-2

LIGHT FOR NOW: God’s corrective tool for the man in Christ as touching sinful conduct is His word.

Now, having established three facts that:

  • Individual misdeeds cannot break our fellowship, relationship or union with God.
  • God does not take away His Spirit from any believer because of an act of sin.
  • God does not use Satan’s tool like sickness, poverty, accident and any other misfortune to teach any believer a lesson.

It is now important to ask, what then does God do as touching a believer’s behavioural misconduct or acts of sin? The answer is simple: God corrects the believer but not with Satan’s tools like sickness, poverty, etc., rather, God corrects through His word; and this correction is not reactionary, that is why He had given you His word before time as His corrective tool. Since God does not pamper sin, He does not condone sin, He does not clap for believers and say keep on sinning; He first punished sin on Himself by His death on the cross and then gave us His written word as His corrective tool for us. His word was before the foundation of the world and thus, His correction for us as touching conduct was documented before time for us. The writer of Hebrews elucidates this fact for us, it reads “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth” (Hebrews 12:6). The word “chasteneth” here means to correct. However, still in this text the writer of Hebrews uses another word “scourgeth” which implies a misfortune or to cause pain or destruction. Obviously, this will be a wrong use of word because God our Father can’t bring scourge (misfortune) on us His children because of a misdeed. To ascertain clearly the writer’s use of word, we will have to examine where the writer quoted from in the Old Testament because he is quoting an Old Testament text which is Proverbs 3:12, it reads, “For whom the Lord loveth he corrected; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth”. From the original words where the writer quoted from, there is no use of the word scourge; only the word correction is used. God does not scourge His children, He only corrects us as a Father; He corrects us with His word. No wonder Paul echoed in his letter to Timothy in 2Timothy 3:16, he makes it clear that scriptures are given for correction and instruction in righteousness. Thus, as a Father who loves us His children, He does not condone misconducts; rather, He corrects us in love with His word. Hallelujah!!!

INSTRUCTION:Sit with God’s word and see your character align to the character traits of the new creature.

PRAYER: Thank you Lord for revelation knowledge, in Jesus Name, Amen.

QUOTE: God’s corrective tool is His word.
