“To open their eyes, and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me” – Acts 26:18
LIGHT FOR NOW: Forgiveness of sins was made available on the basis of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection.
From Paul’s words in our key text, we deduced two things:
- Forgiveness of sins is received
- Forgiveness of sins is an inheritance.
Don’t forget those who are sanctified are the believers. Hence, Paul’s words in 1Corinthians 6:11which reads “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the spirit of our God”. So forgiveness of sins is received in Christ because it was made available by Christ by His death, burial and resurrection. No wonder Paul echoes the fact of the gospel in 1Corinthians 15:3-4 which reads “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures”. So it was on that basis of His death, burial and resurrection that forgiveness of sins was made available. Hence, in our key text, Paul shows us how forgiveness of sins is received, he says “forgiveness of sins is received as an inheritance among the sanctified (believers) by faith that is in me (that is, in Christ)”. So it is in Christ that a man’s sins are forgiven. So faith in Christ means my sins are forgiven. The day a man confesses Christ as His Lord and Saviour, he has received forgiveness and that forgiveness is received only once. That will mean the born again man receives forgiveness of sins only once and that was the day he believed. Paul in Acts 26:18 did not say “forgiveness of sins which is our inheritance as believers received by confession of sins or daily confession of sins”, Paul says it is received “by faith in Christ”. It is Christ that a man will have faith in and confess and then His sins are forgiven. It is not your sins, that is, the act of sin or individual misdeeds that you will have faith in and confess in order for your sins to be forgiven. In other words, the idea of a daily confession of your sins to God for it to be forgiven is erroneous; it is out of place. At the point of salvation, a man does not confess his sins to be saved, he confesses Christ and he is saved and it is in that salvation that we have forgiveness of sins; meaning we don’t pray for sins to be forgiven, we receive forgiveness of sins once in Christ at the point of salvation.
