“I thank my God, making mention of thee in my prayers, hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, and towards all the saints; that the communication of your faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus” – Philemon 1:4-6
LIGHT FOR NOW: Learn to esteem the essential over the non-essential.
In the course of our studies, we began exploring Paul’s words in Philippians 1:9-11 which reads “And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God”. In our previous study, we saw that the result of the prayer in verse 9 is verse 10. Don’t forget that the word “approve” which is “dokimazo” in Greek means to test run, to examine, and to discern. And the word “excellent” implies something that is better and important. So Paul is showing to us that in the believer’s love walk, there are choices. There are options he is faced with. Hence, the use of the word “excellent” is to let believers see that the choice of walking in love is better and important than being offended or taking offences in our interaction with others. In other words, Paul explained that when the believer has precise understanding of the word of God (the reality of who he is in Christ), it equips him with the ability to discern, and consequently influences his choices. Rather than take offences when he is wronged, he will choose to walk in love which is also walking in honour. Therefore, this implies that a believer will not automatically walk in love. There will be reasons to be offended or dishonour believers or fellow believers. However, when we increase in insight and understanding of God’s word, we will naturally make the right decision which is to love or to honour. Hence, it therefore suffices to say that walking in love is a spiritual initiative on the part of the believer; the believer must initiate the love walk. That is to say, walking in love towards fellow believers or living in honour to church leadership or membership is a decision or choice we all must make. For example, despite the perceived wrongdoings we might have, we must choose to see our leaders as God’s vessels and esteem them for their work sake. We are to initiate the love walk. Hallelujah!
INSTRUCTION: Initiate the love walk.
PRAYER: Thank you Lord for my realities unveiled in you; I declare that I walk in the fullness of it, in Jesus Name, Amen.
QUOTE: The understanding of who you are in Christ will influence your choices.
