“I thank my God, making mention of thee in my prayers, hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, and towards all the saints; that the communication of your faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus” – Philemon 1:4-6
LIGHT FOR NOW: Your love walk will not amount in great degree if you don’t first see love as a nature.
As we proceeded in this study, we previously began examining Paul’s words in his prayers to the Philippian church. Philippians 1:9-11 reads “And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God”. Recall the implication of the word “your” (love) does not mean Paul prayed for love, rather he prayed that the believers’ love should abound more. What this connotes is that every believer has the nature of love. So there is no such prayer like “Lord give me grace to love”. You cannot be asking for grace for what is already your nature. Where will God get grace from to give you to love when he has already made love your nature? You don’t pray for your nature; you only receive that nature by faith in Christ. You only pray to grow in that nature or you pray for the understanding of that nature to be made available to you via knowledge or better still you pray to grow and walk in your nature and not to receive grace for that nature.
So the phrase “your love” in verse 9 of Philippians 1 was referring specifically to each believer’s love walk. So instead of praying to receive grace to love, rather pray to walk in your nature which is love; the effectiveness of this prayer will be in knowledge. Love is your nature; it is your identity. You don’t pray to receive it; rather, your prayer should be to walk in it. So if you are praying to God to give you the grace to love, you are praying the wrong prayer. What is part of that grace that you received at salvation is the nature of love. The nature of love is part of that grace that you received when you got saved. So instead of praying amiss, know what is in that grace that you have received and see yourself walk naturally in it. Hallelujah!
INSTRUCTION: Know what is in the grace you have received.
Prayer: My eyes are opened up to the realities found in the grace I have received, in Jesus Name, Amen
QUOTE: Your identity when revealed to you equips you to walk in it.
