“Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,” – Ephesians 1:15-19
LIGHT FOR NOW: You are born of God.
In our investigation into the term “born again”, we’ve come to see clearly that from how it was used in 1Peter 1:23 as grammatically analysed and from its corroborative analysis in John’s synoptic account, it is clear that it is a spiritual truth; it is not a second birth but a new birth. Recall, in John 3, Jesus explained this birth (that is, being born again) as being born of the spirit. Don’t forget that “gennao anothen” (born again) means to be born anew or to be born from above. Now, recall, the use of the word “anothen” in John 3 as again is what James in his rendering translated as “above” which is the same Greek word anothen. Observe James 1:17-18 again, it reads “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures”. Recall, the good and perfect gift in context is the born again man; hence, the term “of his own will begat he us”. Also, when he says the good and perfect gift (the born again man) is from above, he was not saying he is from the sky but he is from God; and thus, why he now speaks of God birthing us of His will. In other words, when I say I am born of God, I just said I am born again. So with all the explanation on this term “born again”, we can deduce that born again means:
- To be born anew
- To be born from above
- To be born of the spirit
- To be born or begotten of or by God
- To be indwelt by God’s spirit or to be born by God’s spirit.
- To be born by the living word (that is, the person of Jesus).
All the above meaning communicates one and the same spiritual truth which is the new birth. I am born again, I am born of God, I am born of the spirit, I am indwelt by the spirit, I am born from above. Hallelujah!
