“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For as many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God” Romans 8:1-4, 14.
LIGHT FOR NOW: The deeds of the body are mortified by faith in Christ.
From our previous study, it was established that the flesh (in Romans 8) refers to the nature of sin. And thus, when Paul spoke about the deeds of the body in Romans 8:13, he was not referring to the physical body but the body of sin; Romans 6:6 brings this to the spotlight, it reads, “knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin”. Paul in Galatians 5:24 lays further credence to this, it reads “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts”. The man in Christ is dead to sin and alive to God, by faith in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Thus, in Romans 8:13, the statement “deeds of the body” refers to “the body of sin” (in Romans 6:6). Hence, mortifying the deeds of the body through the spirit is the New Birth, which is why he concluded the statement with “…ye shall live”. He explained this further in verse 14 which reads “For as many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14). Recall, the word “led” which is the word “ago” in the Greek implies to be carried, to be born. So in context, Paul was explaining being led from the flesh into the spirit; this is the New Birth. In other words, Paul explained that Sons of God are led (born) by the Spirit of God (they are no longer in the flesh, but in the spirit; by the indwelling of the Spirit received at salvation). That is, by faith in the gospel, they have mortified the deeds of the body and are alive; the spirit is life. This is what Paul was explaining, this is the reality of the man in Christ. This man is led (that is, born) by the Spirit of God. The spirit is the nature of this man. By faith in Christ, this man has mortified the deeds of the body (the body of sin). This man (indwelt by God’s Spirit by faith in Christ at salvation) is death to sin and alive to God. Hallelujah! I have been led from the flesh into the spirit. I now have the spirit as my DNA; my nature; the very core of my being. Glory to God forever more.
