“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For as many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God” Romans 8:1-4, 14.
LIGHT FOR NOW: The man in Christ is dead to sin and alive to God.
Having seen that the word “led” means to be born, then to be led from the flesh into the spirit means to be born again. In other words, the believer (the man in Christ; whom is indwelt by the Spirit) has been led from the flesh into the spirit; thus, he cannot live after the flesh, because he is alive in the spirit. Hence, Paul explained in verse 13 which reads “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live”. Thus, the flesh refers to the nature of sin and thus, the deeds of the body in context were not referring to the physical body, why? This is because he had explained earlier in chapter 6, it reads “God forbid. How shall we that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not that so many of us were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore, we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the father, even so we also should walk in the newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we should also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more, death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likeiwse, reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:2-11). Notice the statement in verse 6, “…that the body of sin”. So the deeds of the body in context were not referring to the physical body but the body of sin. The man in Christ is dead to sin and alive unto God, by faith in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. I am dead to sin, I am alive to God. Glory to God forever more. Hallelujah!
