“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost” Titus 3:5
LIGHT FOR THE NOW: Regeneration is not man’s work but the work of the spirit in the life of the man that has believed the gospel.
At the point of salvation, the man that has believed the gospel was indwelt by God’s spirit. The epistles are aware about this: “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the spirit of God dwells in you. Now if any man has not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his spirit that dwelleth in you… For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but ye have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba Father” (Romans 8:9-11; 8:15). “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God” (1Corinthians 2:12). “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13). “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the spirit of his son into your hearts, crying, Abba Father”.
With the above cited text and other overwhelming texts in the epistles, it is clear that at the point of salvation the believer was indwelt by God’s spirit. That indwelling of the spirit is salvation where regeneration is found. Thus, regeneration is the vital work of the Holy Spirit; that is what He does in the believer. The spirit of Christ in a man is what regenerates a man. That regeneration is that man is being raised from spiritual death to spiritual life; that is, in regeneration, a dead man comes back to life. This is because, at salvation, the Holy Spirit gives life to the dead man; and the Holy Spirit giving life to the dead man (which is a man being raised from spiritual death to spiritual life) at the point of salvation is regeneration.
So, which agency regenerates a man that has believed the gospel? It is the Holy Spirit. Therefore, when a man believes the Holy Spirit which is the spirit of Christ/the spirit of God/the spirit of adoption, the spirit indwells that man and that indwelling implies that regeneration has taken place because that man has been raised from dead to life.
