“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren” – Romans 8:29
LIGHT FOR NOW: Jesus is the believer’s model.
There exists a misconception in the mind of many folks or believers today as to who is their biblical model. You will hear some in their words or songs saying, “Lord, I want to be like Moses in my life”, while some in their prayers to God will cry deep heartedly that the grace that was upon Elijah’s life (that grace that brought down fire from heaven) to come upon their life. Some will say, “Elijah is my role model and the list continues. However, the question is, who should be the believer’s model? Is it David, Elijah, Moses etc.? To answer this question and put everything in its right perspective, let’s observe carefully our opening text.
Clarity of the said text will be ascertained by examining key words that make up the above text. The word ‘conformed’ being translated implies to be jointly formed. It refers to essential identity. The next word is the word, ‘image’ which can be understood in the light of the word ‘conformed’ examined earlier. It speaks of a resemblance. Now, observe the keyword in this text, the word, ‘first-born’ which being translated implies a model, principal, leading. This word speaks of the first-begotten referring to a prototype for others or a model for others to follow.
Who then is the first-born? The first-born is the Son (Jesus Christ) as seen in Romans 8:29. Paul in Colossians 1:18 used the same word ‘first-born’. It reads, “And he is the head of the body, the church who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; that in all things he might have pre-eminence”.
So, the first born is Jesus Christ. What does ‘first-born’ mean? It means example or sample, the pattern, model or prototype for others. That said, from Romans 8:29, first-born is the model for the believers. It is important to note that the word, ‘brethren’ is in reference to believers.
That is to say, the believer in Christ is modelled after Christ or Christ is the prototype of the born again man. The born again man is not going to be like Elijah or Moses. The born again man is like Jesus. Elijah, Moses etc. are not the models of the believer. Jesus is our model. We are conformed into the image of His dear son, not the image of Elijah or any of the Old Testament Prophets. Jesus is our model. He is the perfect and only model of the born again man, the new creation. Hallelujah!!!
INSTRUCTION: Don’t just sing a song because it is popular. Let your words be in tandem with this reality.
PRAYER: Thank you Lord for conforming me into the image of your Son, for your nature that is at work in me, and for your life which has now become my life, in Jesus Name. Amen.
QUOTE: Jesus is the perfect and only model of the new creation.
