“And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabacthani? Which is, being interpreted, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me” – Mark 15:33-34
LIGHT FOR NOW: You can explain God’s love in its fullest in Jesus Christ who is God’s love revealed.
Having known that Jesus became our substitute on the cross in previous studies, it therefore suffices us to say that in the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus, we see a clear demonstration of God’s love. That is why God’s love is clearly seen or displayed in what He did in Christ on the cross or what Christ did for us by His death on the cross. We can now say that Jesus is the proof of God’s love; He is the display of God’s love; He is God’s love dispensed; He is God’s love revealed; He is the manifestation or expression of God’s love. You will not know God’s love expressly without knowing Jesus expressly. He is the revelation of God’s love.
In our opening text, it is clear that Jesus was forsaken and thus the cry that came out of His mouth was not a cry to His father for help but a cry of the pains or the agony of sin. And because Jesus is now out of fellowship, darkness now came on the earth for three hours. The three hours of darkness was the period the son of man (Jesus) was transitioning to the sin of the whole world. That is, these three hours, Jesus was transitioning from the Son of God to sin and this transition brought darkness on the earth because the creator could not behold the created (man) looking at the creator (Jesus) becoming sin. So, darkness came upon the earth for three hours shows that what happened to Jesus on the cross was a total display of God’s love. In fact, the ‘cup’ Jesus told the Father to take away from Him while communing with the Father in the garden of Gethsamane was not the physical beatings Jesus received, rather it was these three hours of darkness where God abandoned or forsook Jesus on the cross for the first time.
In the garden of Gethsamane, Jesus could not stand the fact of Him becoming sin which will move Him away from God, hence why He requested that the cup should be taken away, but however He finally submitted to the Father’s will. The physical beatings He received is nothing compared to Him being out of fellowship with the Father because of sin and hence the cry of the agony of sin. He was spiritually separated from the Father; He was out of fellowship with the Father because of man, so that when man believes on Him upon His resurrection, man can be in eternal union with God in Christ. The truth is God’s love is not just speeches; God’s love was and is seen in His action. Jesus is that action of God’ love.
INSTRUCTION: You are secured in his love; stay there.
PRAYER: Father, I am a product of your love and I walk in these realities like never before , in Jesus Name. Amen.
QUOTE: God’s love which is seen in His action was not a reaction but rather a proaction.
