‘Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.’ – 2 Corinthians 5:17
LIGHT FOR NOW: At new birth, we received the life and nature of God.
What is that old thing that passed away. Recall that, in the preceding verse, he instructed believers not to know men after the flesh (2 Corinthians 5:16). The statement in today’s key scripture draws from the same point. It suffices to state that Paul was referring to the old nature – that sinful nature. So, once you are in Christ, the old sinful nature passes away and the new nature takes over. Romans 6:14 affirms that you have a new nature at work inside of you. it says ‘For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law; but under grace’. This is the good thing that is inside of you – the new nature that is at work in you!
At new-birth, the old things pertaining to the old nature start dying and give way to the new thing – the New Covenant at work in you! ‘For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father’ (Romans 8:14-15). This is the New Birth – Christ gave us the life and the nature of God!
You were made a sinner, therefore, you can be made righteous! Jesus was made a sinner. He accepted our sin and became condemned for our sake because we were condemned criminals. Christ went down in death for the sake of man, and until then, no man could get up! He was under locks so to speak. He took our place as we took His place -Christ is our substitute! ‘For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him’ (2 Corinthians 5:21). This is the old that passed away – your sinful nature! Adam made you a sinner; Christ made you righteous. By righteousness, we have life. Life flows on the platform of righteousness.
In Christ, your old nature had passed away. ‘… [No] even though we once did estimate Christ from a human viewpoint and as a man, yet now [we have such knowledge of Him that] we know Him no longer [in terms of the flesh]. May we never know Christ in the flesh, for no flesh has the capacity to make New-Birth possible. Only Christ, the Life-Giving Spirit did! Praise the Lord!
INSTRUCTION: Know not Christ in the flesh. He is our Redeemer and High Priest.
PRAYER: Lord, I thank you for my redemption, in Jesus name.
