“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” – Romans 8:6 (KJV)
LIGHT FOR NOW: The direction of our thinking matters because our minds can either cooperate with the desires of the flesh or align with the life and truth of the Spirit. The mind of Christ learns to interpret and respond to life from God’s perspective rather than being governed by sinful desires.
Romans 8 present two contrasting orientations: the mind governed by the flesh and the mind governed by the Spirit. Paul is not teaching that the physical brain is evil or that the body is the enemy of spirituality. Rather, he is describing two opposing ways of living: one directed by fallen human desires apart from God’s rule, and the other directed by the Spirit of God.
The Greek expression translated “to be carnally minded” is phronema tes sarkos, referring to the mindset or outlook of the flesh. The corresponding expression, “to be spiritually minded,” is phronema tou pneumatos – the mindset of the Spirit. Notice that Paul is addressing more than occasional thoughts. He is describing the orientation that shapes a person’s desires, priorities, judgments, and conduct.
What, then, does Paul mean by flesh? The Greek word is sarx. Although it can refer to physical flesh, in this context it describes fallen humanity in its opposition to God’s will. Therefore, the problem is not that we have bodies, experience emotions, or possess natural desires. The problem arises when our desires and judgments operate independently of God’s truth and become masters over our conduct.
For example, when anger governs the mind, retaliation may appear reasonable. When envy governs the mind, another person’s success may look like a personal threat. When pride governs the mind, correction may feel like an attack. But when our thinking is shaped by the Spirit, we can respond with self-control, rejoice with others, and receive correction without allowing our egos to dominate us. The same circumstances can produce different responses depending on the mindset we follow.
Paul says that the mindset of the flesh is death, while the mindset of the Spirit is life and peace. In the surrounding passage, he explains that the mind set on the flesh is hostile to God, whereas believers are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God dwells in them (Romans 8:7–9). His emphasis is not that Christians must struggle to earn the Spirit’s presence. It is that those who belong to Christ are called to live in agreement with the Spirit who dwells in them.
This distinction is essential: the mind of the Spirit is not achieved by pretending that temptation does not exist; it is expressed by refusing to let temptation dictate our choices. A thought may arise without our choosing it, but we can examine it rather than immediately obey it. We can bring our thinking under Scripture, seek God’s wisdom, and choose the response that honours Christ.
Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh”. Notice that Paul points us toward walking by the Spirit, not merely becoming obsessed with fighting every wrong desire. As we yield to the Spirit’s leading and practise the truth of God’s Word, we learn to resist sinful impulses and cultivate the fruit of the Spirit.
The practical question, therefore, is not simply, “What am I thinking?” but, “What is governing my thinking?” Is it resentment, fear, pride, and self-interest, or am I allowing God’s truth to shape my understanding? The mind of Christ increasingly chooses what agrees with God’s character and purposes. This is how the life and peace of the Spirit become visible in daily conduct. Glory!!!
INSTRUCTION: Today, observe your response when you feel provoked, tempted, or threatened. Before reacting, pause and ask: Is this response being governed by the flesh or guided by the truth of God’s Word? Choose one deliberate action that expresses the Spirit’s fruit; perhaps patience, gentleness, self-control, or forgiveness.
CONFESSION: The Spirit of God dwells in me, and I am learning to walk in agreement with Him. My mind is not ruled by sinful desires, pride, envy, fear, or bitterness. I submit my thoughts and responses to God’s truth. I choose what honours Christ, and I yield to the Spirit’s work in my life. His life and peace shape my attitudes, decisions, and relationships, in Jesus Name. Amen.
