“And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father” – Galatians 4:6
LIGHT FOR NOW: The Holy Spirit does not merely seal our identity; He enables us to experience and express the reality of sonship. The Spirit of God’s Son within us continually turns our hearts toward the Father.
Paul says, “Because ye are sons”. Notice the order. The Spirit is not sent to make us earn sonship. He is given because we are sons. Our identity comes from God’s work in Christ, and the Spirit enables us to live consciously from that identity. Then Paul says, “God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts”. This is remarkably intimate language. The Holy Spirit is not merely around us. He dwells within us. And His presence produces a particular cry: “Abba, Father”.
The word Abba is an intimate familial address for a father. It communicates the reality of a child approaching his father in relationship and trust. The Spirit therefore changes our posture toward God. Religion can make God seem distant. The Spirit reveals God as Father. This does not mean we lose reverence for God. In fact, true intimacy produces deeper reverence because we begin to know the One we worship. Think about what happens when a child knows he belongs to a loving father. He does not approach the father as a stranger. He knows where he belongs.
In the same way, the Holy Spirit teaches the believer to approach God from sonship rather than insecurity. This is why prayer is more than presenting requests. Prayer is fellowship. It is communion. It is the heart responding to the Father. And notice that the Spirit of God’s Son is in our hearts. The same Spirit who bears witness to Christ also produces Christ-like sonship in us. Jesus revealed the Father perfectly, and the Spirit continually directs our hearts toward the Father whom Jesus revealed.
So when you pray, do not merely think about getting something from God. Remember who God is to you. He is your Father. And you are His child through Christ. The seal of the Spirit therefore carries a relational message: You belong to God, and you have access to the Father. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: Spend time today in prayer without rushing into requests. Simply acknowledge God as your Father, thank Him for bringing you into sonship, and fellowship consciously with the Holy Spirit.
CONFESSION: I am a son of God through Christ. The Spirit of God’s Son dwells in me, and He causes my heart to cry, “Abba, Father”. I approach God with confidence, intimacy, reverence, and trust. I live consciously from the reality of sonship, in Jesus Name. Amen.
