“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son…” – 1Corinthians 6:17
LIGHT FOR NOW: God’s purpose in our union with Christ is not merely that we receive Christ’s benefits, but that our lives increasingly reflect Christ’s image. Union produces transformation.
Romans 8:29 reveals something beautiful about God’s purpose: “To be conformed to the image of his Son”. The word “conformed” comes from the Greek word symmorphos, meaning “having the same form, sharing the same likeness, or being shaped according to”. God’s purpose is that the life of Christ becomes increasingly recognizable in His people. This does not mean believers become Jesus or lose their individuality. Rather, it means our character, conduct, and thinking increasingly reflect the One to whom we belong. Paul says in 2Corinthians 3:18, “We all… beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory”.
Notice the process: beholding and becoming. As we continually behold Christ through the Word, the Spirit works transformation within us. This is why what you consistently look at spiritually matters. If your mind is continually filled with fear, bitterness, pride, and worldly patterns, those things can influence your conduct. But when your attention is increasingly fixed on Christ, His character begins to shape your thinking and responses. This is why the Word is so important. Scripture does not merely tell us what Christ did; it reveals who Christ is. We see His compassion; we see His humility; we see His obedience; we see His purity; we see His love; and as we behold Him, we learn to walk in the same pattern.
Jesus said, “Learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart”. Christian maturity is therefore not merely knowing more Bible verses. It is allowing the revelation of Christ to transform the person you are becoming. This transformation happens progressively. There are areas where you may still be growing, but the direction of your life should increasingly point toward Christ. The impatient believer learns patience. The bitter believer learns forgiveness. The fearful believer learns faith. The proud believer learns humility. The selfish believer learns love. This is the beauty of union with Christ: the One we are joined to begins to shape us.
God is not simply interested in making us religious people. He is forming Christ in us. And the more Christ is formed in us, the more His image becomes visible through us. The world should be able to encounter something of Jesus through the way we live. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: Spend time today beholding Christ through the Scriptures. Choose one character of Jesus you see and intentionally practice expressing it throughout the day.
CONFESSION: I am being conformed to the image of Christ. My thoughts, character, words, and actions increasingly reflect Jesus. As I behold Him, I am transformed from glory to glory, and His life becomes visible through me, in Jesus Name. Amen!
