OUR UNION WITH CHRIST (1)

“But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit” – 1Corinthians 6:17

LIGHT FOR NOW: Christianity is more than receiving blessings from Christ; it is being brought into union with Christ Himself. The believer’s new life is rooted in this spiritual union.

One of the deepest realities of the Christian life is that God did not merely save us from sin; He brought us into fellowship with Christ. Paul says, “He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit”. Notice the expression “joined unto the Lord”. The Greek word translated “joined” is kollao, meaning “to cleave,” “to adhere,” or “to become closely united.” Paul uses this word to reveal the believer’s intimate spiritual connection with Christ. The believer is not merely someone who believes in Jesus from a distance. He has been joined to Him.

Jesus illustrated this in John 15 when He said, “Abide in me, and I in you”. He used the picture of a vine and its branches. A branch receives its life by remaining connected to the vine. Christ is therefore not merely the One who gives us help. He is our life-source. This is why Paul repeatedly describes believers as being “in Christ”. In Christ we have redemption, forgiveness, righteousness, acceptance, and new life. 2Corinthians 5:17 says, “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature”. Notice the location: in Christ.

Your new identity is not primarily determined by your past, your weaknesses, or your circumstances. Your identity is rooted in your position in Christ. This does not mean that the believer becomes Christ or becomes God. The Creator remains distinct from His creation. But grace has brought us into genuine fellowship with the Son of God. John writes, “Truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ”. The Greek word for “fellowship” is koinonia, meaning participation, communion, or shared fellowship. What a revelation!
God did not merely invite us to observe His life; He brought us into fellowship with Him. This is why the Christian life cannot be lived successfully through self-sufficiency. A branch cannot produce fruit independently of the vine. Likewise, the believer must learn to live from Christ.

The secret is not self-dependence but Christ-dependence. When you understand your union with Christ, prayer changes. You are not trying to convince a distant God to come near; you are fellowshipping with the God who has already brought you near in Christ; your confidence changes, your worship changes, and even your response to trials changes.
You begin to understand: Christ is my life. Christ is my righteousness. Christ is my strength. Christ is my confidence. The Christian life is therefore not merely Christ working for you. It is Christ living in you, and you learning to live from Him. You are joined to the Lord. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Throughout today, consciously remind yourself that you are in Christ. Let this truth shape how you see yourself, pray, and respond to life’s challenges.

CONFESSION: I am joined to the Lord, and my life is rooted in Christ. I refuse to live independently of Him. Christ is my life, my strength, my righteousness, and my confidence. I walk today in the reality of my union with Him, in Jesus Name. Amen!
