BE ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING (14)

“And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?” – Matthew 6:27

LIGHT FOR NOW:  Anxiety creates the illusion of control, making us believe that excessive worrying can change an outcome. But worry cannot add to our lives; it only drains the strength we need to live today.

In Matthew 6, Jesus asks a question that exposes the fruitlessness of anxiety: “Which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?” Jesus is confronting the tendency of the human mind to believe that worrying can accomplish something. We worry because we want to solve problems. We worry because we want to prevent bad outcomes. We worry because we want to control the future. But Jesus asks: What can worry actually accomplish? The answer is: nothing. Worry can occupy your mind without changing your circumstance. It can keep you awake without producing an answer. It can exhaust your emotions without adding one moment to your life. This is one of the deceptive characteristics of anxiety: it feels like activity even when it produces no solution. You may sit quietly, yet internally you are working overtime. You are calculating, predicting, rehearsing, imagining, and trying to solve tomorrow before tomorrow arrives.
But Jesus teaches us that anxiety cannot accomplish what it promises. It cannot add to your stature. It cannot control tomorrow. It cannot guarantee an outcome. It cannot manufacture provision. It cannot protect you from every possibility. Therefore, worrying is not the same thing as preparing. There is a difference between responsible thought and anxious thought. Responsible thought asks: “What should I do today?” Anxious thought asks: “What if everything goes wrong tomorrow?” Responsible thought leads to action. Anxious thought often leads to endless mental repetition. God expects us to plan, work, learn, prepare, and make wise decisions. But He never designed us to live mentally inside futures that have not yet arrived.
Jesus continues by pointing to the birds of the air. They do not sow or gather into barns in the same way human beings do, yet the heavenly Father feeds them. Jesus is not teaching laziness, He is revealing the Father’s care. If God cares for His creation, how much more does He care for His children? This means your security is not ultimately based on your ability to predict and control every circumstance. Your security is rooted in the Father’s care. Sometimes anxiety says: “If you stop worrying, something terrible will happen”. But Jesus teaches the opposite. Worry does not protect you, trust does. Worry does not strengthen you, grace does. Worry does not give you tomorrow’s wisdom; God gives grace for each day as it comes.
This is why Jesus later says: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself”. Tomorrow has its own concerns. Today has its own assignment. There is wisdom in living within the grace God has supplied for the present moment. You do not need tomorrow’s strength today. You need today’s grace today. When tomorrow arrives, God’s grace will already be there. So stop spending today’s strength trying to live tomorrow. Do what God has placed before you today; pray today, work today, trust today, obey today; and leave tomorrow in the hands of the God who will already be there when it arrives. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Whenever you catch yourself worrying about something that has not yet happened, ask yourself: “Can this worry actually change anything?” Then redirect your attention to what God has given you to do today.

CONFESSION/PRAYER: Father, I refuse to waste today’s strength worrying about tomorrow. I trust Your care over my life and my future. Give me wisdom to handle today’s responsibilities and grace to leave tomorrow in Your hands. I refuse to allow anxiety to consume the strength You have given me for today. I choose faith, wisdom, and peace, in Jesus Name.  Amen.
