“When I am afraid, I will trust in thee ” – Psalm 56:3
LIGHT FOR NOW: Faith is not the absence of fearful feelings; it is the decision to trust God even when fear attempts to speak to the heart.
Many people think that a person of faith should never experience fear. But Scripture presents a more honest picture of the human heart. David says: “When I am afraid, I will trust in thee”. Notice that he did not say, “If I am afraid”. He said: “When I am afraid”. David understood that there are moments when fear may attempt to rise within the human heart. The presence of fear does not automatically mean the absence of faith. What matters is: What will you do when fear comes? Fear is an emotion, but faith is a response. You may feel afraid and still choose to trust God. You may receive troubling news and still choose to believe His faithfulness. You may not know how a situation will end and still place your confidence in Him.
David gives us a simple pattern: Fear may come, but trust must answer. This is important because many believers become anxious about being anxious. They experience a fearful thought and immediately condemn themselves: “Why am I feeling this way?” “Maybe I do not have enough faith”. But faith is not pretending that the emotion does not exist. Faith is refusing to allow the emotion to become your master. David did not deny his fear. He redirected himself toward God. “I will trust in thee”. Trust is a decision of the heart. It is the deliberate choice to place greater confidence in God’s character than in the frightening possibilities your mind is imagining. Fear often speaks in the language of “What if? What if I fail? What if this does not work? What if something goes wrong?” Trust responds: “But God is with me”.
The goal is not to answer every fearful “What if?” with another human calculation. The goal is to bring your heart back to the truth of who God is. David continues in the same Psalm: “In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me”. Notice the connection between trust and God’s Word. Fear grows when the mind continually feeds upon threatening possibilities. Faith grows when the heart remembers what God has said. This is why you must learn to answer fear with truth. Not necessarily by shouting louder than your emotions. But by deliberately choosing what will have the final voice in your heart. Your feelings may say: “I am afraid”. But faith can say: “I trust God”. Both statements may describe what is happening within you at the same moment. Yet the second statement determines the direction in which you will walk.
Courage is not always the absence of fear. Sometimes courage is simply obedience in the presence of fear. So today, do not be discouraged if a fearful thought comes. Do not conclude that you have failed spiritually. Instead, follow David’s example. When fear comes, turn toward God. When anxiety speaks, answer with trust. When your heart trembles, anchor it in His Word. You do not have to be fearless in yourself. You simply need to know where to place your trust. And the One who holds you is greater than the fear confronting you. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: Do not condemn yourself when fear attempts to arise today. Instead, consciously say: “When I am afraid, I will trust in God”. Then meditate on a promise from Scripture that reminds you of His faithfulness.
CONFESSION/PRAYER: Father, when fear attempts to rise in my heart, I choose to trust You. I refuse to allow my emotions to become the final authority over my life. Your Word is greater than every fearful imagination, and Your presence is greater than every uncertainty before me. Strengthen my heart and teach me to respond to fear with faith, in Jesus Name. Amen.
