“As his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness… And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge…” – 2Peter 1:3, 5
LIGHT FOR NOW: The divine nature is a gift, but spiritual maturity is a responsibility. God imparts His life instantly, yet He calls every believer to grow diligently in the expression of that life.
One of the greatest balances in the New Testament is found in Peter’s second epistle. On one hand, Peter declares that God’s divine power “hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness”. On the other hand, he immediately says: “Giving all diligence…” This reveals an important truth. The divine nature is received by grace. But its expression requires diligence.
Notice that Peter does not tell believers to strive to obtain the divine nature. That has already been received through the new birth. Instead, he urges them to cultivate the life they have received. He begins by saying: “Add to your faith virtue”. The word “add” comes from the Greek word epichoregeo, meaning to supply generously, to furnish abundantly, or to provide lavishly. Peter is not teaching that faith is incomplete. Rather, he is teaching that genuine faith should continually express itself in a growing Christian character.
He then presents a beautiful progression.
• Virtue – moral excellence.
• Knowledge – growing understanding of God’s truth.
• Temperance – self-control.
• Patience – steadfast endurance.
• Godliness – reverence expressed in daily life.
• Brotherly kindness – love for fellow believers.
• And finally, Charity (love) – the highest expression of God’s nature.
Notice where Peter ends. He ends with love. Why? It is because love is the fullest manifestation of the divine nature. Every stage of spiritual growth moves us toward becoming more like the God who is love. Peter then makes a remarkable statement later in the chapter: “If these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ”. The divine nature was never intended to remain hidden; it is designed to abound, to increase, to become evident.
God desires that every believer be spiritually fruitful. This growth does not happen accidentally. Just as a healthy garden requires cultivation, watering, and attention, the believer’s spiritual life flourishes through consistent fellowship with God. Prayer deepens our dependence. The Scriptures renew our minds. Obedience strengthens our faith. The Holy Spirit continually shapes our character. Each day we yield to Him; the divine nature becomes more visible. This also reminds us that spiritual maturity is a lifelong journey. There is always more to learn, more grace to experience, more love to express, and more of Christ to reflect.
No believer has exhausted the riches of God’s life. Until we see Christ face to face, we continue growing from glory to glory. Therefore, never become satisfied with spiritual stagnation. The God who has given you His nature also invites you to grow continually in the knowledge and likeness of His Son. Every act of obedience; every moment of prayer; every meditation upon His Word; every opportunity to walk in love becomes another step in expressing the divine nature more fully.
Today, determine not merely to possess God’s life but to cultivate it diligently. For the life that is nourished is the life that becomes fruitful. Hallelujah!

CONFESSION: Father, thank You for giving me Your divine nature through Christ. Help me never to become spiritually complacent. By Your Spirit, strengthen me to grow continually in faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love until Christ is clearly seen in me, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
