LIGHT FOR NOW: Before you ever sought God, the Father’s heart was already moving toward you in love. Redemption began in His love long before it appeared in history.
As we journey deeper into the revelation of the Father’s love, we discover that His love is far older than we often imagine. Most believers first think of God’s love at the cross; and rightly so. The cross is the greatest demonstration of divine love. However, the cross was not the beginning of God’s love. It was the revelation of a love that already existed in the Father’s heart. Paul writes: “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world…” This verse takes us beyond time itself, beyond human history, beyond creation, and beyond Eden. Paul brings us into the eternal counsel of God. Before mountains existed; before oceans were formed; before Adam walked in the garden; the Father already had Christ in view. And in Christ, He already had redemption in view. This truth reveals something remarkable: God’s love is not reactive; it is intentional. The Father was not forced into redemption; He planned redemption; He desired redemption; He purposed redemption. This is why believers must never think of themselves as an afterthought in God’s plan. The Father’s love was not an emergency response to human failure. His redemptive purpose was centered in Christ from eternity.
Paul says: “He hath chosen us in him…” Notice carefully: The choice is “in Him”. That is, in Christ. Everything the Father has purposed for believers is found in His Son. Christ is the center of God’s redemptive plan. Christ is the beloved Son. And through union with Him, believers become recipients of the Father’s love. This is why the New Testament repeatedly emphasizes being “in Christ”. Outside Christ, there is condemnation; in Christ, there is acceptance. Outside Christ, there is separation; in Christ, there is sonship. Outside Christ, there is death; in Christ, there is life. Paul then reveals the Father’s purpose: “That we should be holy and without blame before him…” Many people mistakenly think holiness is primarily about earning God’s acceptance. But Scripture teaches the opposite. The Father accepts believers in Christ and then works in them to produce holiness. Holiness is not the root of God’s love; it is the fruit of God’s love.
The Father does not love us because we are holy. He makes us holy because He loves us. This distinction is important. When believers misunderstand this, they begin striving for acceptance. But when they understand the Father’s heart, they begin growing from acceptance. Paul concludes with a beautiful phrase: “Before him in love”. Everything in this passage is surrounded by love. The Father’s choice was motivated by love. The Father’s purpose is carried out in love. The believer’s standing before God is secured in love. This means that love is not merely one aspect of redemption. It is the atmosphere in which redemption exists. The Christian life begins in love, grows in love; and ultimately reaches its fullness in love. One day, believers will stand before the Father completely conformed to the image of Christ; every weakness removed, every struggle ended, every imperfection gone. And when that day comes, they will discover what has been true all along: The entire story of redemption was written by the Father’s love. From eternity past to eternity future, His love remains the foundation of it all.
INSTRUCTION: Spend time today thanking God for His eternal purpose in Christ. Rejoice in the fact that your salvation rests upon His love and not merely upon your efforts.
CONFESSION/PRAYER: Father, thank You for loving me before the foundation of the world through Your eternal purpose in Christ. Thank You that Your love is the foundation of my salvation, my growth, and my future. Help me to live daily in the security of that everlasting love. Amen.
