And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus”. – 2 Timothy 3:15
LIGHT FOR NOW: Believe and Receive
The writer of Hebrews explains that the Sabbath or rest which was used interchangeably was made for man to enter therein and man can only enter by faith, that rest was available in God from the foundation of the world.
“Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, as I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world”. – Hebrews 4:1-3.
The above text (verse 1) lest a promise; where was this promise made? In the Old Testament, Genesis 2:2-3 “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made”. In verse 2, “for unto us was the gospel preached”; what is the gospel that was preached? Christ! The promise of us entering into his rest, which is through salvation, and the promise of salvation can only be received by hearing the gospel of Christ.
Furthermore, in Genesis 2:16-17 “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die”. Moses also used words like “fruits and mouth” to communicate spiritual realities, which is “believing and speaking”.
Proverbs 11:30 “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise”. We also realize that Moses didn’t mean fruits literally. So you can not just eat a fruit and be saved; you simply need to believe and confess that you have received salvation. Romans 10:9-10 says “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Glory!
