“Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe according to the working of his mighty power” – Ephesians 1:16-19
LIGHT FOR NOW: Jesus’ authority in the four gospels as the anointed one differs from his authority in the epistles as the exalted one.
It is clear from our above text that Jesus today is seated at the right hand of God. That right hand of God is not a location, like saying right hand side, but it’s a figure of speech that refers to authority. Jesus today is seated at the right hand of God, a place and position of his authority. Jesus’ words upon his resurrection in Matthew 28:18-19, it reads “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost”. Firstly, it is worthy of note that the statement of Jesus here in Matthew 28 was based on the fact that he had risen and went to heaven. So, it was upon his exaltation that he made this statement. In essence, until he was exalted, he didn’t make this statement.
The word “power” here (Matthew 28:18) was translated from the Greek word “exousia” which means authority. Jesus was saying “All authority is given unto me in heaven and in earth”. In Luke 9:1-2, it reads “Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and heal the sick”. Jesus gave his disciples authority and with that, they preached and healed the sick. Luke 10:19 has this to say “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you”. He gave them authority in the four gospels. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: See Christ and yourself in him.
CONFESSION: I see Jesus seated at the father’s right hand and I in him, in Jesus Name. Amen.
QUOTE: The authority of the anointed one in the four gospels is not the same as the authority of the exalted one in the epistles.
