“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the Law of Moses.” – Acts 13:38-39
LIGHT FOR NOW: Forgiveness is your inheritance in Christ.
From our opening text, it is important to note first that it was Paul who gave this sermon in Acts 13. Notice, when Paul talked about the forgiveness of sins in verse 38, the preaching of it was inferred in the same verse; implying that the forgiveness of sins is preached. It is a message that ought to be preached. Faith in this message equals forgiveness. That is the forgivness of sins is received by faith in Christ. Hence, Paul’s words in verse 39 of the same Acts 3, “And by him all that believe are justified”. The “him” referred to here is Christ. So, forgiveness is a preaching. Jesus himself echoed same in Luke’s synoptic account, “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:47). Note, the word “and” used between repentance and remission is not constructive but explanatory. It is gotten from the Greek word “kai” and in this context, it implies that is or which is. So Jesus here is saying, “And that repentance that is the remission of sins should be preached”. Again, it is clear from Jesus’ words that remission or forgiveness of sins is a preaching.
A man’s sin is not forgiven because he asked for it in the place of prayer. The price of sin is paid for not by apology or feelings of remorse but by death. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Christ paid the price for us by dying on the cross, being buried and rising again – all according to scriptures (1Corinthians 15:3-4). Christ paid for our redemption. The price Christ paid for you was precious – His precious blood. Here, blood is used to reference the totality of Christ’s atoning work. Forgiveness thus is what Jesus accomplished in his death, burial and resurrection and thus, sins are forgiven eternally by faith in this accomplishment. Forgiveness is not what you did, it is what Jesus did. You are forgiven not because you continually prayed for your sins to be forgiven but because you have believed in the gospel of Christ. Apostle Paul in our opening text said “through this man” (that is Jesus), and in Luke 24:47, it is clear that this remission is in the name of Jesus. Thus, forgiveness of sins fundamentally is the message of the gospel. Forgiveness therefore is in the gospel of Christ and not in a man’s prayer neither is it an answer to man’s prayer.
INSTRUCTION: You are eternally forgiven because you believe in the gospel, be conscious of this.
PRAYER: Father, I thank you for the inheritance I have in you which is the forgiveness of sin. I am the saved and the sanctified; I am justified in you, in Jesus Name, Amen.
QUOTE: Forgiveness is not prayed, forgiveness is preached.
