“And this is the record that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his son. He that hath the son hath life, and he that hath not the son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life…”- 1 John 5:11-13
LIGHT FOR NOW: When a man hears and believes the gospel, eternal life is imparted unto him instantly.
Apostle John in his synoptic account stated that the reason why he wrote was for men to believe. “But these are written, that ye might BELIEVE that Jesus is the Christ, The son of God; and that believing ye might HAVE LIFE through his name”(John 20:31). This opines that the purpose of the synoptic account (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) is to the end that men will believe and out of their believing, they will have life through His name. But in our theme texts, John stated that the reason why he wrote his epistles was so that his audience MAY KNOW THAT THEY HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. And this is consistent with what we see in the entire apostolic writings. The fact is that when a man hears and believes the gospel, eternal life is imparted into his spirit instantly. Therefore, a basic fact of Christianity is that anyone who believes in the gospel (Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection, ascension and glorification) receives eternal life instantaneously. It must be noted that eternal life is a gift to be received and not what you work for. The greatest discovery a Christian can make is that of the power of eternal life. Eternal life can also be said to be the name of God; the life of the believer now isn’t something he is trying to get or what he is having faith for; it is a vital and present reality in you if you are born again. Unfortunately, some folks think they will have eternal life when they get to heaven hence, they have their lives subjected to the elements of this world. But according to Apostle John, eternal life is in God’s son and whosoever has the son has this life now. Jesus rightly said, “…as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the son to have life in himself” (John 5:24-26).
Jesus came to give us eternal life and with this life you cannot perish (John 10:27-29); eternal life is the guarantee for our eternity with the Father; It is what preserves us from death and protects us against the forces of darkness of this world. Eternal life is what reveals God’s love towards us and the power that makes us His offspring. It is what we have presently, it is what has made us who we are in Christ; it is what stirs up in us the joy of salvation; such that no circumstance can molest nor get us depressed. Eternal life is our assurance for a blissful, triumphant life now and in eternity. Eternal life in us implies that we are God-class-GLORY!
INSTRUCTION: Acknowledge that you have eternal life.
PRAYER: I affirm that I have the spirit of God in me which is the assurance of my eternal salvation. GLORY!!!
QUOTE: All that Christ wrought in His substitutionary work belongs to the believer.
