“And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to the cross” – Colossians 2:13-14
LIGHT FOR NOW:Jesus’ sacrifice was substitutionary in that it was our death he died and in dying our death, he gave us his life.
Having examined the words:
- Blotting out; which deals with records, that is, something that is written.
- Handwriting; which implies a handwritten bond or a legal document.
Let’s proceed to answer the question; Where is it written? That is, where is this handwritten bond or legal document written? When Deuteronomy 31:9-26 is read, certain things will come to the fore which are: There was a book of the law written by Moses which he insisted must be put in the side of the ark of the covenant as a witness against Israel. Let’s hear from Paul in the epistles in the line of this explanation. In Romans 3:19-20, Paul says “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every month may be stopped; and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore, by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin”.
In Galatians 3:10-12, Paul has this to say “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, cursed is everyone that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, the just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, the man that doeth them shall live by them”. The certificate of debt is the law. The law proves that a debt is being owed. The handwritten document shows the offense and the penalty. That is what the law does: it shows the offense and also carries the penalty. An example could be seen when a man is arrested for driving against the law and given a ticket as proof that he has committed an offense and therefore has an obligation to discharge. Paul says in Romans 8:2 “For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death”. The commandments were hostile. Hallelujah!

PRAYER:My eyes of understanding are enlightened, in Jesus Name, Amen.
