“Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time” (1Timothy 2:6).
LIGHT FOR NOW:An unsaved man will only be saved not because Jesus died and rose but because he has believed in that fact.
In our investigation into the key words that make up the above text in order to bring us to a place of perspicacity that the statement of Paul in the above text does not make salvation automatic upon all even though it is available for all, we have come to examine three words which are the words: gave, for and all. Recall:
- The word “gave” used here by Paul from its corroborative analysis is a word that deals more with the attitude of the giver than the gift itself.
- The word “for” carries with it the concept of substitution.
- The word “all” which is “pas” in Greek must only be interpreted contextually, it shouldn’t be generalized and mustn’t be given an omnibus application.
Let’s go further as we examine the last word “ransom”. The word “ransom” used by Paul in the key text above was translated from the Greek word “antilation” which implies the price that was paid. The word “ransom for all” as we have already said could be erroneously inferred, from the use of words here that the whole world is saved since Jesus gave himself a ransom for all. However, if we read contextually, we will see that the context points otherwise, the reading “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that e may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time” (1Timothy 2:1-6). In verse 4, Paul said that God’s will is to have all men saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. This implies already that all men are not saved. Rather in the will, He gave his son a ransom for all. So without any doubt, having examined the text above, we can deduce that salvation which has been made available for all by the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus is not automatic upon all since all have not believed in the gospel. Hence, the need for preaching the gospel. It is only faith in the gospel of Christ that saves a man. Hallelujah!
