“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light: and there was light” Genesis 1:1-3.
LIGHT FOR NOW: When man makes a choice of rejecting God’s offer, the outcome of that choice is man-made and not God.
Having understood the above text, it is now easy to ascertain that in Genesis 2:16-17, the tree of life will be Christ figuratively portrayed. In other words, the light of Genesis 1:3 in who is life is the tree of life of Genesis 2:16-17. The tree of life can better be understood as “life as a tree” rather than “the tree of life” because there is no such tree as the tree of life. Using the grammatical construction “life as a tree” captures the fact that this was the person of Jesus (the life) communicated by Moses as a tree. Eating of that tree will now be figurative of faith in Christ, and the opposite of this, that is, not eating of the tree of life is unbelief which equals the tree of knowledge of good and evil. No wonder in John 6, Jesus will say “I am the bread of life, he that eateth of my body…” How can you eat of Jesus’ body? You cannot literally eat of His body, which was a figure of speech for faith in him; hence the context of John 6 elucidates that fact.
Notice, death is in the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:16-17) and in Genesis 1:2a, death was in darkness. Remember that darkness in Genesis 1:2a was not God’s doing, it was the absence of the light of God. Similarly, the tree of knowledge of good and evil will not be God’s offer to man, it will be the absence of God’s offer to man which is the tree of life. Meaning the tree of life is God’s offering to man, the absence of this offering or man rejecting this offer is what Moses communicated as the tree of knowledge of good and evil, even though Moses in his vision analysis of chapter 2 presents it as though God offered these two trees to man, but no. God’s plan as we have seen has always been Christ, and thus God’s offer to man was His plan who is Christ (life as a tree) and man not persuading to this offer of God is what Moses in his vision calls the tree of knowledge of good and evil. That is why a vision is subject to interpretation and it is in the place of careful interpretation that things can be put in their proper perspective. So God offers man His plan for man to make his choice but God who knows ahead of time warns man of a choice that if he makes, he (man/Adam) will die; notice God is not the one responsible for the death, the death will be the outcome of man’s choice of unbelief to God’s word. So the tree of life was the gospel of God, gospel of Christ, eternal life, salvation plan offered to man or preached to man for man to choose to eat off (belief) or not eat of (unbelief). This is the goodness of God to humanity but what was humanity’s choice? Hallelujah!
