“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, the just shall live by faith” Romans 1:16-17
LIGHT FOR NOW: The saving ability of God is in the goodness of Christ where we find the goodness of God.
Notice Paul’s words “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ…” in the text above. In Greek mythology where the word “gospel” was translated from two Greek words:
- “Euaggelizo” which implies good news.
- “Euaggelion” is the announcement of the good news.
Fundamentally, the gospel is good news; in other words, the preaching of the gospel is the announcement of good news. The preacher of the gospel is an announcer of good news, a good message, a good tiding. For a message to be good news there must be certain facts in it that makes it or qualifies it to be called good news and this we will see as the study proceeds. Observe, after Paul says “I am not ashamed of the good news of Christ”, he further said something that will give us a lead in this study. He said, “It is the power of God unto salvation”. Remember, Paul said “good news” earlier and now says “this good news is the power of God unto salvation”. In other words, the good news of the gospel is God’s power to save. Meaning, God’s saving power is within the gospel of Christ. And the power of God is seen within the conduit of salvation. So;
- Salvation is the good news or
- God’s power to save (which is salvation) is the good news.
So, the good news of the gospel is God’s power to save. Meaning we can only define the gospel (the good news) within salvation. Salvation therefore becomes the good news of the gospel and in that salvation will be a revelation of God’s goodness to humanity. So, God’s goodness to humanity is seen in the good news of the gospel which is salvation. Therefore, the power to save is the goodness of God within the good news of the gospel. God’s saving ability is in the good news of Christ and within that saving ability is the unveiling of His goodness and love for humanity. Hallelujah!
INSTRUCTION: Know the good news.
PRAYER: Thank you Lord for your goodness in the good news of Christ, in Jesus Name, Amen.
QUOTE: Within the good news is God’s goodness to humanity seen in salvation.
