“I thank my God, making mention of thee in my prayers, hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, and towards all the saints; that the communication of your faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus” – Philemon 1:4-6
LIGHT FOR NOW: God’s word is the first thing you must identify yourself with as a believer.
The importance of knowing your identity in Christ cannot be overemphasized, because your ignorance of it will be a minus to you and not to God. Now, keep our key text in mind because in the course of our studies on this subject, we will carefully explore this text. More vitally, don’t lose sight of the word “acknowledging” (in verse 6) and the phrase “in Christ” which is the bedrock of the epistles because we are coming back to all of that. Furthermore, keep verses 5 of Philemon 1 in mind because we are going to investigate into it more carefully in the course of our study. Now let’s begin to establish few basics that you must not lose sight of as far as our investigation is concerned. As a believer, the very first thing you must identify yourself with and appreciate is God’s word. You cannot be born again but by God’s word. Outside God’s word (the person of Jesus who is the living word, and the written word which is the bible), we cannot have the born again man. So outside the word, no one can be born again. Little wonder Peter echoed in 1Peter 1:23 which reads “Being born again not of the corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever”. So you are born again by what? By the word. God and his word are the same. Hear John in his synoptic as he unveils the person of the word who is the reality of God’s word or better still God’s written word, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth”. The first appreciation that a believer must thus have is appreciation for the word. In chapter 2 verse 2 of Peter’s epistle, hear what he has to say “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby”. In essence, the word is a person (John 1:1-4; 1:14; 1Peter 1:23), but the word is also a book or in a book which is the bible (1Peter 2:2). Hence, when Peter said “desire the sincere milk of the word”, it was in reference to this book called the bible. So, the appreciation for the word that we are talking about in this study is appreciation for the book called the bible. So, God’s word (the bible, the scriptures) is the first thing you must identify yourself with as a believer. Hallelujah!
