Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, – Ephesians 1:15-19

LIGHT FOR NOW: Born again is not a rebirth, born again is a new birth.

As we proceed in this study, we began exploring the word “born again” used in 1Peter 1:23 and we discovered that it was in reference to being born anew. Now, we began observing Jesus’ explanation of this word in John 3 (in His discussion with Nicodemus) for further clarity and we discovered that the word “born again” does mean a second birth, neither does it mean to be born from the sky, but rather in the context of Jesus’ explanation, Jesus pointed our attention to the spirit. In other words, it was a spiritual birth and not a birth in terms of numbers. That is why “born again” is not a re-birth, but a new birth. So the big question that now comes to the fore is why is it not a rebirth? Just by understanding what the word rebirth means in normal parlance and understanding what “born again” means from Greek etymology as we have explained, you won’t think of “born again” as a rebirth but a new birth. In normal parlance, the word “re-birth” implies a reincarnation, that is, a new birth subsequent to one’s first. So questions:

  • Is born again a reincarnation? No
  • Is born again a new birth subsequent to one’s first birth (that is, in order of numbers)? No
  • Is born again a revival or a spiritual renewal? No
  • So, what is born again? Simply from Jesus’ explanation in John 3, born again means to be born of the spirit. It is a spiritual birth, it is not numbers.

Recall, Jesus in John 3 used the word water as figurative (that is, symbolic of the spirit). So, born again is a spiritual birth. In essence, being born again is when the Spirit of God takes up residence in a man. Our last question for today, when the Spirit of God takes up residence in a man, is that a re-birth or a new birth? A new birth. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Stay with the written word.

PRAYER: Father, I declare that the eyes of my understanding are opened up to my realities like never before in Jesus Name, Amen.

QUOTE: Born again is not a re-birth, born again is a new birth.
