“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” – Isaiah 53:3-7
LIGHT FOR NOW: The bible opens up with the revelation of salvation.
In the course of this study, we have to go to a place of precision of the fact that in Genesis 1:3, God’s utterance there was salvation. Having seen from a body of scriptures in the New Testament especially John 1:1-5 and 2Corinthians 4:6, it is clear that the light shined in the hearts of men and thus, as we have to establish, the statement “and darkness was upon the face of the deep” was a figure of speech (called personification) which was to describe man’s state without the light (man in sin, man in darkness); and thus, why the statement “and darkness was upon the face of the deep” was to further explain the preceding statement “And the earth was without form and void”. In other words, the statement “And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep” was a spiritual truth of man in darkness; man in the state of sin; man without Christ (the light). Moses foresaw the predicament of men in Genesis 3 which was a by-product of man rejecting God’s word in Genesis 2:16-17. But in Genesis 1, Moses shows us the solution to man’s state in Genesis 3 which will let us see subsequently that in redemption or salvation, God did not react but He pro-acted. So Moses says, man is in chaos; man is nothing; man is empty; man is in darkness but in the same vein shows us the solution to man’s problem, and what is this solution? “And the spirit of God moved upon the face of waters. And God said light be” (Genesis 1 verse 2b and 3). The statement “And the spirit of God moved upon the face of waters” is also a personification just like the first statement we saw in previous studies. This statement “And the spirit of God moved upon the face of waters” is in reference to the life of God and this is what he explained in the next verse as God’s utterance of light (“And God said light be”); it is in salvation that a man receives the life of God; hence, why we established earlier that life is in the light. So, “the spirit of God moving upon the face of waters” is God’s life found in the light. So the solution to man’s state of emptiness and darkness (Genesis 1:2) will be in man receiving the offer of God’s spirit which is His life found in the light (that is salvation). So in salvation, a man receives God’s spirit which is His life. So, you could see that in Genesis 1, God accommodated Genesis 3 and in Genesis 1, you could see the reason for God’s word in Genesis 2:16-17, and also in Genesis 1, you will also see that God was unaware (that is, He foreknew) that man will not accept His word in Genesis 2:16-17. Hallelujah!
