“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost” Titus 3:5
LIGHT FOR THE NOW: The Spirit of Christ in the heart of the born again man imparts the life of Christ into that man.
It has been seen in the course of these studies that the believer is one who has been raised from the dead to life. Hence, the life of Christ in a believer by the Holy Spirit in that believer regenerates that believer. Thus, the believer has been regenerated or the believer is regenerated in the sense that at the point of salvation, the life of Christ becomes the nature of the believer. Recall, that in Titus 3:5, Paul used the word renewing in the light of regeneration and then explains it as the work of the spirit.
Thus, regeneration is a vital work of the Holy Spirit in us. Hence, we saw that at salvation, a man receives a new kind of life or a different kind of life (which is eternal life) and this life is different from the former corrupt state he was before he got born again. All that influenced this man in his former state of life or in his former nature was automatically changed at the point of salvation because at this point of salvation, regeneration in his spirit by the Spirit (that is the Holy Spirit) took place. Thus, Holy Spirit changes the condition that had affected his nature; that is why Paul’s words in context brings further elucidation to this fact which reads; “Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, to speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our saviour towards man appeared. Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us , by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our saviour” (Titus 3:1-6).
Therefore, Paul in context of discussion explained the former state of the believer (verse 4) and then explains what God did which was a display of His love that is not dependent on works, rather this kindness and love is seen in what He did to save us through the washing of regeneration, that is renewing, which is of the Holy Ghost (verse 4-6). And thus, at the point of regeneration, a man’s nature changes; that is, a man now has the nature of God; therefore, such a man lives unto good works (verse 1-2). Hallelujah!!!
